LOCAL SURF BREAKS

Hiriketiya Bay Reef Break

A lovely intermediate to advance point. A powerful left hander that holds up to 8ft and can be rather unforgiving on a shallow corral reef. You can catch the same wave further down the beach on the sand break with less power or right out the back at the bay entrance for advanced surfer. Consistent wave most of the year.

For the beginers, Hiriketiya Bay is a 500m beautiful horseshow shaped cove with left reef and beach surf break. It is a perfect place for surf families to stay, catering for beginner to intermediate level.

Dondra Surf Point

Dondra is on the most southern point in Sri Lanka, a medium sized fishing port where you can arrange whale watching tours during the peak months December, January and April. Reef and beach break east of the town is not consistent and only works when there are good swell.

The open sea is rough round there with strong rips, if you paddle out too far the next time you see land will be Antarctica. Other than that there is a light house and not much more info from our side.

Talalla Bay

Talalla bay is a beautiful, sheltered crescent shaped cove, fringed by palms and about 2 kilometers long. Close by is the town of Tangalle.

Beginners can learn on the sand bottomed beach break and there is a small reef rear a cafe. Waves are low power fun but close out quickly, still you can get about 150m white water rides. Nice place to relax and forget about everything, not much surfing going on, a couple of nice surf camps that mainly teach in Dickwella.

Madiha Surf Point

One of the more overlooked surf points in the region. Consistent swell, 350m rides, reef break, intermediate to advanced surfers. The local Madhia Surf Club are perfect for giving you tips on this break, they have all grown up surfing it!

Kabalana Beach Break

The Kabalana beach break is great for beginners where you can froth about in the white water and a few local surf schools to look after you. There are some more challenging steep left and right on the beach side close to the main point. On the south side of the beach by the small rock take care with the rip currents about 2-300m from the shore, there are no lifeguards to rescue you.

Kabalana, The Rock, Surf Point

Kabalana Main Surf Point or The Rock as its is also known, is reputed to be the best A-Frame reef break in Sri Lanka. Generally it has good power, left and rights with a fast ride of around 400m. Kabalana is more a short board wave, South Beach Point just north is better for long-boards. Between Jan to Mar waves can hold to 8-10ft, making it a popular break for intermediates, advanced and locals
